Chapter 8

When Tyler came out of the bathroom Lilly was huddled beneath the covers in a fetal position. He normally slept in the nude, but he didn’t think she would appreciate that so he slipped on a pair of sweats. Unfortunately for him they were tented in the front, which seemed to happen every time he came within touching distance of her.

Hell, there was nothing he could do about it. He’d turned the shower to ice cold and still it hadn’t abated his libido.

It broke his heart when he thought of all Lilly had been through, but if she knew how he was thinking…well, he guessed she wouldn’t be lying there pretending to be asleep. He should let it go…let her go, but he couldn’t, and he wouldn’t because she was beginning to mean too much to him, completely flummoxing him. Only because of no other reason than he hadn’t expected to find a woman he would care more about than any other woman in his life here in Cape Charles.

As he looked at the floor where he’d put down some extra blankets he’d found along with a spare pillow, he growled inwardly. The floor looked extremely uncomfortable, and he wasn’t looking forward to sleeping there. He looked at the bed longingly. He sighing. The floor it was. He listened to her easy breathing, wondering if she was asleep. When he heard the springs on the mattress groan a few times he realized not only was she not sleeping, she was restless.

“Lilly.”

The movement stopped. He waited for her to answer.

“Lilly, you might as well answer, because I know you’re awake.”

“And you just know everything, don’t you?” she replied.

“Yep, I’m glad you realized it.” He put his hands behind his head as he lay on his back. He chuckled when she threw a pillow at him.

“I can’t sleep,” she whispered tentatively.

“I know.”

“Tyler…I’m cold.”

He immediately sat up. “Do you want some more covers?” When he looked, she was sitting up in the middle of the bed, her legs brought up so her chin was resting on her knees. She looked so lost and lonely. “What do you want, sweetheart?”

“Will you share the bed with me? I don’t want to be alone.”

He swallowed down the anticipation, but knew he would restrain it. She wasn’t asking for a bed partner, just someone to give her some loving.

Loving? What the fuck was that about?

He stood up, walking toward her. The darkness hid anything she might be thinking as he stood looking down at her.

“I’m sorry, I don’t know if I can…if I can let you—”

He cut her off. “I know, Lilly. Just let me come in, get you warm.”

He moved the covers back, sliding into the cool cotton.

“We will make love, but not tonight,” he whispered. He heard her breath release in a big gasp as if it was a load off her mind.

She turned on her side, leaving him to face her back. She was shivering, and as naturally as if he’d done it all his life, he put his arm around the indentation of her tiny waist, pulling her back against him.
