Betsy arose from patting the toddler’s back. Alex Jr. squiggled slightly, but he did not wake up. He was teething again, getting his two year molars, and was not happy about it.

Betsy had promised she would help her husband with copying the beginning of another piece for the newspapers. Alexander had declared (or perhaps cautioned?) this would be “the longest and most important work he’d ever done.” His essays in defense of the new Constitution were to be written under yet another nom de plume, this time, “Publius.” Hamilton had initiated the project, with assistance promised by John Jay and James Madison.

Betsy found him pen in hand, fair hair glinting in the candlelight, quill scratching. When he heard her enter, he stopped to smile up at her.

“How is our boy?”

“Asleep at last. I only hope he stays that way.”

“Yes, so do I. Although he probably thinks he has first claim upon his mother, I am in desperate need of you. Please sit, Mrs. Hamilton.” He stood and offered her a chair. After she’d taken the seat, he moved over and pulled a neat pile of paper close.

“This is the first of it.”

As he returned to his side of the table, Betsy surveyed the stack. Hamilton was off to a good start. It was already longer than the longest brief she’d ever seen.
