The Power of Our Words
Communication is the art of listening, watching, and sharing. Communication Godâs way is certainly not âunloadingââbacking up your dump truck of gripes, disappointments, and frustrations and releasing the load on the head of your mate. It is the free exchange of thoughts, ideas, and opinions shared between two or more people who are willing to be open, honest, and, yes, vulnerable.
But itâs more than words. Communication specialists estimate that only 8 percent of our communication is verbal. Beyond that, 35 percent is emotional, 55 percent is body language, and 2 percent is intuitive. These observations may be true, but never discount the sheer power of verbal communication. Who can begin to imagine how critical are those words we allow to spill out of our mouths?
⢠They are like seeds that can grow into trees that bear fruit for generations.
⢠They are like arrows that pierce and kill and cannot be recalled.
⢠They are like sparks that can ignite a conflagration.
⢠They are like ropes that can pull a drowning person out of the deep.
Carefully chosen, wisely offered words can change a countenance, soften stony resistance, splash cool water on a hot temper, release tension, and rein in raging emotions. Thoughtful, well-timed words can soothe savage passions, lift up the downcast, give hope to the depressed, and grant new life to those who just want to die. Like a signpost on a lonely road, they can change the very direction of a personâs life.
This is why we need to learn what we can about communication if we truly want to have a marriage without regrets.
