Chapter 24

It’s the next day now. Once again there is a deafening noise filling the tent and rousing us from our sleep. It’s Alice’s phone again. It’s Alice’s brothers again.

Shouting starts to happen when she answers it so I get up and leave the tent - I sense she may want some space and I can’t deal with this again. I let Dex out of the van, he’s ecstatic to see me. I don’t like him sleeping in the back of a van overnight, but I don’t have too much choice at the minute, the tents far too cramped for the three of us and it’s too cold for him to sleep outside. He’s in good spirits and bounds from the back of the van enthusiastically.

I hook up his lead and we head out for a walk. Whilst doing all of this I’ve overheard Alice say the following things from inside the tent:

“Please don’t start again. I’m not in the mood,”

“Brad, he’s not kidnapped me, he’s not holding me hostage, were having fun and I’m not ready to come home yet.”

“Dad is fine, stop bringing him into this,”

“Why can’t you just let me do what I want, why is it such a big deal to you? I’m a grown women Chad, and I’ll do as I please.”

“I appreciate your concern I do, but I’m just travelling around a bit. It’s what we’ve always done. I’m hardly going into space and back. I’m only a couple of hours drive away so please back off.”

I wander off with Dex and let the conversation fade behind me, frankly bored of it and struck with déjà vu. This is all getting a little silly now - her brothers are a bit too intense I think? I think they’re straying close to obsessive, crossing some kind of boundary with their constant badgering.

Poor Alice is on the verge of a nervous breakdown, stuck between both parties like this. I let Dex off his leash to run across some empty field that I’ve stumbled into; he’s having the time of his life on this trip, even if no one else is.

I think her brothers must be so intense, because they’ve never really been separated from each other the years. They’ve spent a couple of decades holed up as a family together in a cramped caravan, travelling across Europe and around numerous countries.

They’ve had an eventful and exciting life, tinged with moments of tragedy admittedly, but a close and intense life none the less. The downside of that is her brothers can’t seem to deal with her leaving their side for more than a few hours, they’re just not used to not having her around and they rely on her more than they would like to admit.

Morning dew carpets the field as I crunch across it after Dex. He’s digging up something again, probably looking for another huge stick. It’s a bright and crisp winter’s morning, and a calming and serene morning’s walk does a lot to elevate my frayed and taut nerves.
