I wished I could say that I finally relaxed enough to get some work done, but that would have been a blatant lie. I spent the next hour staring at my computer screen and trying to force myself to answer an email, but my ability to form sentences had abandoned me. Everything had blended together into one mass, much like my thought process.
By the time Cassidy came into my office and announced that it was lunchtime, I was ready to get this whole lunch date over with so I could move on with my day and my life.
After grabbing my lunch from the fridge in the teacherâs lounge, I found a table at the far end of the room and sat down. I winced when I remembered what Iâd packed. Leftover spaghetti with a cucumber and an apple wasnât exactly what I wanted to sport in front of Danny. I didnât have a desire to hide the kind of mother I was, but I also wanted the blinders to stay on somewhat. Iâd rather him think I was more put together than I really was.
Thankfully, I ate my lunch when there were few teachers on lunch as well. I liked eating alone, and when there were others in the lounge, I always felt like I needed to talk to them. That hadnât always been a bad thing, but I hated how pleasantries always started with someone asking how you were.
I hated lying, but I also didnât want to dive into my current life status. So I just avoided the whole situation altogether and stayed to myself. But, when a figure filled the doorframe, and I glanced up to see Danny standing there, the fear that Iâd made a big mistake washed over me.
Why was I here, and what was I doing? Did I think I could possibly be someone else? How could I have thought that this was a good idea?
I was losing my mind.
But I was trapped with nowhere to go. And when Danny located me and smiled as he walked over, I realized I was in trouble. I was actually doing this. A lunch date with a man. Regardless of how much I tried to tell myself that this wasnât a date, I couldnât help but feel as if it kind of was.
And that thought scared me more than Iâd initially thought.
âI actuallyââ
But Danny grabbed my hand before I could finish what I was saying. He pulled me to my feet, grabbed my lunch box, and headed over to the fridge. His hand was firmly wrapped around mine as he deposited my lunch inside and shut the door. Then he dropped my hand and turned to face me. âCome on, I have a better idea.â
My entire body felt numb. A better idea? What did that mean? Were we going to eat lunch?
Despite the warning bells that were sounding in my mind, I decided to allow myself to trust him. I followed after him as he led me through the lounge and out into the hallway.
