I still remember getting the call. I was driving, homeward bound, and had to pull into a rest area just outside of town to take it. I allowed myself a quick glance downwards as I signalled to turn off the road and saw Doctor Lambert’s number flashing on my screen. Ordinarily his general office number wouldn’t have caused any great alarm, but now his mobile number stared back at me with his smiling face accompanying it. It was bad news.

Three weeks previously I had started not feeling totally together with myself. Lethargy had kicked in big time, and for a long period I couldn’t drag myself off of the sofa. I coughed up blood more than once, ignoring it at first and then slowly getting used to the red speckles that adorned my handkerchief when I pulled it away from my mouth, the worst of it was that I started routinely finding it in my stool. I knew something was up then. Shortness of breath was also killing me. I relented and finally went to see Doctor Lambert, the family go-to for the past twenty odd years, for some initial tests. I hate being prodded and poked, questioned like a criminal about my lifestyle and made to wait for hours on end. One thing the American health system will routinely do is sting you for every dime before they tell you what, if anything, is wrong with you. I was dreading the bill for my tests coming through. I had spent the best part of the day waiting around before being seen to for less than an hour in total, a few vials of blood were taken, I pissed in an even smaller container and had an x-ray. Nothing majorly exhausting for either party, but I’d still pay through the nose for it.
