CHAPTER 14

Damian had been working extremely hard all morning, trying to make up for the loss that had occurred the previous day. He also needed to make up for the fewer men who were working today. Not that he minded. Some of the men who had been trapped the day before had still shown up for work, but the ones who were not there very much deserved the day off. Sure, it left a lot on his shoulders, and Alan’s too, but they were very hard working men who took on whatever life threw at them.

This was what life was like in the mines, and why the men who worked around him had become like another family to him.

But Damian still took a little moment to have a break the moment he spotted Madeline making her way down to the mines. She had not discussed that with him, he was not too sure of her teaching schedule, so it was a wonderful surprise to see her. Especially when she was looking particularly lovely in her blue day dress, with her hair tied back in a matching ribbon in her hair, which was its natural frizzy state, framing her face perfectly. He found a smile on his face before he even realized it was there.

He was still a little unsure about where they stood with one another because he had left before breakfast, so the previous night when he was in the bath was the last time, they saw each another. It was certainly a little strange, but that did not stop him from being happy to lay eyes on her. Confusion or not, she still always brought him joy.

Damian was not the only one who seemed pleased to see her. There was a crowd of people who immediately lit up at the sight of her. As the children raced towards her, he was hit with a strong instinct that one day she was going to be a wonderful mother. He was happy that he would be the father to the said child. Even if it had not happened just yet.

Not only had Madeline brought plenty of water and some fruit for everyone, but she had sticks and ribbons for the children to play with as well. They were immediately very excited about this, and happily played while Madeline took some time to talk to the wives of the men who had been trapped yesterday. He knew that they already thought fondly of her, but it appeared from where he was standing that Madeline was endearing them to her even more.

She seemed to find it easy to move among the workers, winning hearts and minds, and that was even before she started to teach. As soon as that happened, he was truly impressed with how captivated all the children were by her. It was a challenge to get all the children to focus at once, but she seemed very capable of anything she put her mind to.

“You have married very well, Damian,” Alan declared, finally pulling his attention away from her.
