Chapter Ten

Glad that conversation was over, Lucy dried

herself off, went to her bedroom for a quick shower, and put on a pale blue Alexander McQueen suit and matching shoes. She needed to go back to the hospital to see how Thomas was. She would talk to Christian later. Hopefully, he would be willing to talk to her.

Lucy spent the afternoon in the hospital with Thomas. They couldn’t talk much as he was sedated for most of the time. She had gone over how she would leave him a million times in her head but it was disturbing watching him lying in that hospital bed—it made divorcing him so much harder. She decided to go and find them both some food.

Shortly after Lucy left, Jane arrived and sat by her son’s bed.

“How is he?” Jane asked the nurse that was monitoring him.

“I’ll get a doctor to talk to you,” the nurse answered, not wanting to talk to Jane herself. The doctor arrived and told Jane Thomas was slowly recovering. After the doctor left, she pulled a book from her purse. She had brought Thomas’s childhood favorite, Biggles—Air Detective by Captain W.E. Johns. For two hours she read to her son, then left with Conrad Senior.

Just after Jane departed, Lucy returned to Thomas’s room with some food.

Lucy noticed he was fuming, she asked him why?

“Lucy, I am angry because my parents didn’t say much to me. My mother just sat there reading me a childish book. At least seeing you Lucy is making me feel better. You are such a gorgeous sight with your long blonde hair, youthful face, and radiant blue eyes. They shine so sweetly and are a delight to see. Nothing is going to stop me holding onto you my precious wife, especially not that deranged stepmother of yours.”

Lucy was flawed by this outburst of emotion. She paced around his room, feeling stressed by what he had just said to her. What would she do if he didn’t let her go? She could only hope that this lawyer Loretta had recommended to her was as good as his reputation. Granted, it wasn’t her highest priority right at this moment. She was more worried about the fact that Thomas wasn’t saying anything. He was simply staring at her.

“Can you stop pacing and sit down?” he grumbled weakly.

“Alright,” she said quietly, pulling up a chair next to his bed.

“We can just sit together,” he said. “It always makes me feel better when you’re with me, Lucy.”

Lucy raised an eyebrow, shocked. He must be really ill to speak to her that way. It must be the painkillers that are making him a nicer person. He doesn’t seem to have the strength to be rude. By early evening Lucy was ready to go home and get more sleep. Ruthlessly, Thomas begged her to stay.

He couldn’t help thinking, Lucy was just being stubborn. He didn’t understand why she didn’t want to stay with him, why she wanted to divorce him. He had been a good husband to her, giving her everything money could buy.
