Gib

It was almost like we’d never left. The day I got back to work, I had a schedule full of patients. More than usual, actually, because I’d been gone for a week.

Allen was back to working ridiculous hours, but never as bad as it’d been before he’d gotten sick. Despite that, we fell into a rhythm that worked for us. Seldom did we have more than a few hours together, but life somehow worked out anyway, especially since we were both working at communicating with each other better.

The months passed by quickly. When Allen was working long weekend shifts, I’d go back home to help with the nieces. Olivia and Chase had decided to enroll Chrissy in preschool that fall to help prepare her for attending kindergarten the following year.

Ruby and Margie were both in the full throes of the terrible twos. Olivia had recently gone back to work part-time, which meant the nanny Miss Margaret had hired ended up staying at the house full-time.

Miss Margaret had moved to Franklin, which surprisingly, Olivia mourned frequently, saying how strange it was living in the old Victorian without one of our foster moms there. She and Miss Margaret had really bonded over the raising of the girls. I knew more than anything Olivia was missing her relationship with the only mother she had left. Now that Miss Margaret wasn’t the dictator she’d been when we were kids, I too had begun to think of her as a parent.

Allen and I usually had Sundays off together, so that was officially our day. Sometimes he’d go with me to visit the family, and we’d spend the night there. Most of the time, though, I’d spend Mondays with them, since I tended to have that day off too, then drive to the clinic on Tuesday mornings.

“I’m not going,” I overheard Chrissy say as I spoke with Olivia on the phone one morning. Olivia had called me, exasperated and amused. “Uncle Gib is coming, and I want to see him!” Chrissy yelled in the background.

“Um, well, I can pick her up from preschool, if that helps,” I offered. I could tell by her chuckling that Olivia was amused my niece could dictate my day, even though I wasn’t there.

“Uncle Gib said that if you go to preschool, he’ll pick you up… and even buy you an ice cream.”

“Wait, Olivia, I didn’t say ice cream! She’ll be hyper as…”

“Yay!” Chrissy’s shout of joy in the background told me I’d lost the argument. Hyper or not, I was buying her an ice cream.

In a roundabout way, that was how our new schedule began. Since Chrissy would be attending kindergarten the following year, we all agreed I’d pick her up from preschool at noon on Mondays, so she’d be used to going to school. It also meant she still had quality time with me when I was there.

The toddlers, well, they were a handful. I would’ve never thought it possible, but they were even more than Chrissy had been.
