I looked at Charley and sighed and took off my jacket, I turned and for the first time he saw I was armed, I asked if he really wanted to do this, he just laughed and said hell yes he did and he reached for his pistol, and JJ shot him, Fox shot the next one, the other two just stood there, one pissed his pants, they were so busy watching me they forgot the ones who hadn’t said a word.

JJ spends a lot of time with “Them”, they chase rattle snakes and wrestle mountain lions for fun, and he shoots with them, a lot, I think he’s likely as fast as Sandy, Fox on the other hand is just flat out good with a gun, I have to work hard to be almost as good, he just is.

The folks in the café came busting out the door and were surprised to see their local hero lying dead along with one of his sidekicks, they were stunned, one of them said we were in a great deal of trouble because the dead man had brothers and all were mean as hell, I looked at the cook and said “Did you enjoy your coffee this morning? He looked surprised but said well hell yes, I asked the others, they all nodded, one asked what difference that made, I said we were the people who ran the trade trucks thru the area and if we didn’t like them they would find out what no coffee, no fuel, and no anything tasted like. That slowed them down a lot.

One of the older gents standing there said “Your John Walker ain’t ya? I said I was, he said he thought I’d be taller, actually he said that he had seen us in another town to the west, one of our settlements, He looked at the rest of them and said I don’t know about yawl but I ain’t doing without my coffee because Dawkins here got his ass shot off which in fact was long overdue so yawl do what ya want but I didn’t see nothing, except Dawkins started a fight with a stranger and died for it. The ones who had come in with the dead guys were looking around and then decided they had urgent business elsewhere, I nodded to the old man and said don’t get in trouble with these brothers that were mentioned, just point out the way we went and don’t worry about the coffee, he smiled and said thanks and that this dead asshole wasn’t no lose to the gene pool. I like the old coot.

We headed out of there and kept heading north, but not too far, I figured if the fool’s brothers were going to come looking for us we might as well get it over with, I thanked Fox and JJ for their fast work, JJ smiled and said he wasn’t used to getting in on the fun since my crazy wives usually finished it before he could get there, he had a point.
