REEVES

Cameron’s chatter goes in one ear and out the other as I watch them on the dance floor. My pretty wallflower and the stubborn teammate. For them to know each other as well as they do, they look awkward as shit out there. Either Everett’s game is trash, or I’ve misread him because this? This is downright pathetic. Her hesitant smiles. His forced ones. Fuck, she might as well be asking him to turn his head and cough with how uncomfortable the bastard looks.

What’s going on in your head, Ev?

Her smile falls, and her eyes drop to the floor. Like she’s embarrassed. Ashamed. My hands clench, and I nod my head, pretending to listen to whatever bullshit story my buddy’s spewing as I turn back to the trainwreck on the dance floor.

Dylan pulls away from him, her movements tight and jerky. He grabs her wrist, and she pulls away from him, her upper lip curling with contempt. Suddenly, she darts away, clutching her aquamarine dress in her hands, grabs her purse from the table, and rushes outside like my very own broken Cinderella.

I’d laugh if the situation wasn’t so messed up.

It’s midnight somewhere. Right, Dyl?

“What do you think, Reeves?” Cameron asks.

I shake my head, stepping around him. “I’ll be back in a few.” I stride straight toward the motherfucker on the dance floor. It takes everything inside of me to keep my expression as if I don’t care, as if I don’t have skin in the game, as if I don’t care how Everett, holier than thou Everett, pissed off the girl we’ve fought over for far too fuckin’ long.

“What did you say to her?” I demand.

“It’s none of your business, asshole.”

“Answer the question.”

Everett and I are pretty evenly matched in height, and our weights are the same. Hell, we’re even two peas in a fucking pod when we’re at the gym and go back and forth on who can do more reps, etcetera. But I have no problem beating the shit out of him if he made her cry.

The calloused asshole glares back at me, his own frustration consuming him as the people around us start to form a circle, sensing the brewing tension.

“Back up, man,” he grits out. “I’m not in the mood.”

“I don’t give a shit. What did you say to her?”

“She isn’t your date, so this has nothing to do with you.”

“You forget she isn’t my date because I passed you the puck for the good of the team instead of taking the shot myself.”

He scoffs. “You never would’ve made it.”

“And you’ll never let me smooth things over with you after I fucked up the playoffs.”

“You’re right. I won’t. You don’t deserve her,” he grits out.

“Says the guy who made her cry,” I spit. “What the fuck is your problem, man? All she wanted was a night out with her friends.”

“My problem is you’re a selfish prick who doesn’t think of anyone but himself.” He shoves me in the chest, and I stumble back, almost hitting the edge of the crowd surrounding us.
