“I can’t believe that it’s already February and we all just managed to finally see each other,” my friend, Maleah, exclaimed, and me and my circle of close-knit friends all agreed. There were four of us — Yani, Maleah, Christelle, and me. Yani and I had been close since our high school days, and we’d met Maleah and Christelle our freshman year. We all stayed in the same shitty ass dorms our first year.

“Girl,” Yani said, “Both classes and work are kicking my ass. I need these bottomless mimosas today.”

“Who you telling,” Chrissy said, “that’s part of the reason I keep you and Maleah around.” We all shared a laugh, even though Leah and Yani flipped us off. Chrissy and I were only twenty, so on our brunching Sundays, we depended on the adults to slide us the drinks.

“So, guys,” Yani grabbed our attention just as we began to dig into our food. “What would y’all do if you came home from work and found your roommate in the living room fucking some dude she had NO business fucking with?” she asked nonchalantly, and I started choking on the piece of pancake I had swallowed.

“Damn boo, you okay?” Yani’s fake self-asked, smirking. I should have known she’d do this when she let the last two days go by without a peep about Dasiah. It be your own people.

“I hate you!!” I finally managed to say, shaking my head.

“What?” she said, laughing. “I ain’t say it was you.”

“Well, now you did,” Leah said, eyes landing on me. “Um, I thought you were done with breaking hearts for the semester.”

“Why do people keep saying I break hearts?”

“Because you do. My brother is proof,” Yani pointed out. Her older brother and I had a thing my senior year in high school. How was I supposed to know a college dude would get caught up in my little high school ass?

“Reece gotta let that hurt go.”

“I don’t care about Reece,” Chrissy butted in. “Bih, who did she catch you having sex with?”

I let out a deep sigh. “First of all, Yani exaggerated that damn story.” I filled them in on what had really happened, purposely leaving out Dasiah’s name.

But here go my best friend being messy. “So, who was it?” She batted her lashes.

“Dasiah, bitch, damn.”

Maleah’s neck dropped into her chest as Chrissy gasped. “As in Stokes? As in Rick’s best friend? As in—”

“The chocolate drop that’s headed our way right now?” Leah cut off Chrissy, and the blood drained from my face as my vagina began to come alive just from sensing his presence.

“That is the one,” Yani said right before I felt a hand on my shoulder—a hand that sent shivers down the center of my body. What the fuck was he doing to me?

“Ladies,” he greeted. Should I have really been surprised that he was here? No. Rick was DJing the day party portion per usual.
