How to Make Donations

Table 3.2 provides a list of HBCUs by state.44 As you explore the different HBCU schools, consider their specialties and areas of strength and what a donation would mean in terms of the impact on the Black community. The president of Howard University, Dr. Wayne Fredrick, stated in an interview about this subject, “What's necessary is first to really find areas where we can have the biggest impact and make sure that we do that extremely well. That does require some focused funding in particular areas.”45 He went on to give an example about dentistry, noting that 40% of the Black dentists in this country are produced by two HBCU schools, Howard and Meharry Medical College. Funding programs that increase the quality of and access to programs like these could be exponentially beneficial. Find your school in the following ways:

Research HBCU by state, academics, specialty, and focus areas.

Find schools that align with your passions and interests.

Contribute 8.46% of your philanthropic dollars to either the school's endowment or in support of specific programs.

Design your contribution in a way that allows the HBCU to invest/disburse outside of industry norms (i.e., 5% of endowment used only for administrative purposes).
