“Can you repeat that, please?” Alistair says.

“I kissed Helen and she kissed me back.” We’re on our fourth gin and both far from sober at this point. We’ve moved from the bar to a nook in the back room of the pub.

“No way.” He shakes his head vehemently. “That’s simply not possible. I’ve known Helen Swift for a very long time and she would never do such a thing.”

“She claims that she confused elation about my reaction to her H.S. Barr confession with the desire to kiss me back.” I’m so glad to be able to talk about it. And this is the only way. Drunk, in a dark corner of the pub.

“Is today April Fool’s Day?” Alistair asks. “Did they change the date? Are we having a second one in October?”

“It’s okay if you don’t believe me. In fact, the more incredulous you are about it, the more helpful it is to me.” I’m not even sure of what I’m saying anymore. It’s more drunken babble than anything else.

“Wait. I believe you.” He glances at me. His eyes are glazed over. “It’s more that I can’t believe Helen. It’s so unlike her.”

“That may be so… but it really wasn’t that hard to get her to kiss me.” I revel in the memory for a few seconds.

“And now she doesn’t want to kiss you anymore.” He juts out his bottom lip, as if in deep contemplation.

“I’m glad she still wants to be my supervisor.”

He briefly lifts a few fingers. “You’re consenting adults. These things happen. It’s just the way of the world. I should know.”

“Has it happened to you?” The booze is making me very forward.

“I’m the rare gay who doesn’t fancy younger men.” He bursts out laughing. “But, my partner Jack used to be a professor.”

What he says doesn’t really register. I can only think of Helen. “Do you think Helen will come around? That there’s even the slightest chance?” I might as well ask him now. It’s a unique opportunity.

He huffs out a slow breath. “Honestly, I don’t think there’s much chance. Then again, fifteen minutes ago, I would never have believed Helen would go around kissing students, so there’s that… People can—and always will—genuinely surprise you.”

“You can’t tell her that I told you, Alistair. You have to promise me that you won’t.”

“No.” He shakes his head. “That’s not a promise I can keep. For all my many virtues, keeping this a secret will not be one of them. Helen’s my friend. She’s probably agonising over this like crazy. I have to be there for her.”

“Please tell me you’re the one pulling my leg now.” Panic streaks through me. “She might drop me as her DPhil student if she finds out I told you.”

“Look, don’t worry about it. I’ll make it so she’s the one who tells me. I’m pretty good at that.” He winks at me. “In that respect, your secret’s fairly safe with me.”

I let my head fall into my hands. “Shit. I shouldn’t have told you.
