Chapter Five

Michael stared at the monstrosity that stood in the middle of Ian’s family room. He’d left Ian’s house after helping him bring in the remainder of his purchases. When Ian’s dad had seen what they were carrying in, he’d excitedly started ordering Ian to get his tools from the shed. Michael had excused himself when his mother sent him a message about dinner. Two hours later, he’d come back over with a beer for Ian. As he handed Ian the bottle, he took a step back and tilted his head to get a better look at the top platform, the flat surface of which reached about twenty centimetres from the ceiling. That was only part of the problem, in Michael’s eyes. The real issue was the colour. The dirty brown material clashed horribly with the bright blue accent sofa that had floral cushions strewn across it. The colour combination was so at odds that it nearly burned the retinas out of his eyes.

“I should go with you next time you decide to get your eyes checked,” Ian said.

Michael threw a frown at Ian. Taking another sip from his beer and not bothering to reply, he turned back to gape at the structure again. It looked big enough for the twins to live in, should they choose to have their own space.

“There’s nothing wrong with my eyesight,” Michael said.

“Mate, I remember what you told me at the shelter, that it would be seventy-two inches high. I should’ve checked before you hoodwinked me into buying this... this... tree.”

“I didn’t say seventy-two inches. Look,” he said, pointing at the mess strewn across the floor. “The box clearly says seven feet two inches. It’s your own fault you didn’t check first.”

“Uh huh. Blame it on the boyfriend, why don’t you, mate,” Ian said, rolling his eyes.

“Ian,” Michael said in a patient voice. “It’s right there, clearly on the box. Seven. Feet. Two. Not seventy-two.”

“How was I supposed to know that? I have no idea what feet and inches look like.” Ian’s voice was rising, and his tone was starting to get petulant. “If they’re going to sell things in Australia, they should label them in metres and centimetres so we know what they mean. If it had said two hundred and twenty centimetres, I would have known what I was getting myself into.” Ian huffed slightly and took a sip of his beer.

“And what’s with that on the table? Are those things real? I didn’t know they sold fish at the shelter. Please tell me you didn’t buy fish for the kittens to play with?”

“They’re robo fish.”

Squinting his eyes, Michael walked over to where the fake aquarium was set on a delicate-looking pedestal table at one end of the sofa. Upon reaching it, he squatted down and peered into the fish bowl where an orange clown fish and a blue one that resembled Dory were swimming around in jerky motions. Perched on the arm of the sofa, nearest the table, were Thea and Maddy.
