Smoke alerted her nose, then flames did the same to her other senses. Aislynn opened her eyes, watched the mill burning, and screamed.

Nothing sounded.

Fire licked at the granary, smoking the labors of days into the night air, while the crackle of it ate away at the mill floor. Aislynn screamed again and there was still no sound to it.

Then it was Father opening the stable, smoke billowing from the door. Even there? Aislynn wondered. In the stable? Fire didn’t consume that rapidly, did it? The shadow that was her father was moving, letting their prize goat from the building, and then he was falling.

Aislynn screamed again and again, until her throat couldn’t contain more of them. Nothing changed. Her father was still being attacked. And then she saw the flickers of shadows; unclothed, muscled, frightening shadows.

A sound of agony and torment floated above the sounds of fire. Aislynn grabbed her throat, knowing they didn’t come from her own throat. It felt too raw. She knew who it was making it, though—Mother. Horror gripped her tightly, suffocatingly, and there was nothing she could do.
