CHAPTER FIVE
I
itwas just before ten o'clock, and I was drinking my second cup of coffee.
I had planned to stay in my room for most of the morning, and then, on my way to pick up the car, buy a hat. Skurleti, I was sure, would be out working on his list of houses; and, as I had given him two addresses inGagnes, there was a possibility that his visit toGagnes might coincide with my appointment with Lucia. If he should happen to catch a glimpse of me driving by, a hat, I thought, would make me harder to recognize. Sun-glasses would also be worn, but only, I had cleverly decided, if the morning overcast cleared and the sun came out.
The last hat of any kind I had worn had been an EngEsh school cap. I was wondering vaguely what sort of hat to buy—felt or straw, good or inexpensive, light-coloured or dark—when the telephone rang.
The sound made me jump. The only person who knew I was there was Lucia, and I hadn't been expecting her to call. Moreover, she didn't know that I had had to register in my own name. She would ask for Pierre Mathis, and then realize . . .
I snatched up the phone and said “Hello”.
“MonsieurMaas?” It was the hotel operator. “There is a call for ...” She broke off and then said apologetically: “I am sorry, the person did not wait.”
“What person?”
“There was no name.”
“A man or a woman?”
“A man, Monsieur.”
“What sort of voice? Was he French?”
“Oh yes.A Marseillais, perhaps.”
“Did he ask to speak to me?”
“He asked if you were staying in the hotel. I did not know, so I looked at the list. When I saw your name, I said that I would call your room, but he did not wait. If he calls back . . .”
“Yes, of course. Thank you.”
Obviously, the stranger from Marseille had been given the job of telephoning all the hotels. Now he had found the one they wanted and had hung up at once so as not to alert me.
I had to get out, and get out quickly. If they were still at Mougins I had time enough. If they had already moved into Nice, things were going to be difficult.
I hadn't shaved or even brushed my teeth. I scrambled into the clothes I had been wearing the night before, threw the rest of my things into the suitcase, and went downstairs. It can't have taken me more than five or six minutes. It took me another five to get the bill made out and paid.
There was no hope of getting a taxi quickly outside the hotel. I scuttled across the road and along theQuai Papacino. I felt horribly exposed. There was a ferry steamer tied up there with a large notice on the stern:ATTENTIONAUXHELICES. It seemed an appropriate injunction at that moment. When I came to a side-street with a one-way-only sign, I immediately turned down it. I was going away from the harbour area now, and they couldn't use that street to approach it by car.
