Chapter 21

Jaynell wanted to scream. This was not how she pictured her wedding. The church was nice. An old structure from the 1800’s with some modern updates, but not too much to have the building lose its original charm. But the country club? It was antiquated. And not in a good way. Most of the rooms looked as if they hadn’t been updated since the 1940’s, and the members behaved as if they were still living in that period. The female wait staff wore what looked like battleship gray maid’s outfits, and the males wore the same color gray suit of tails with a bow tie. And the members? Geez. They talked at the staff, instead of to them. All around her, she noticed people behaving in the same manner.

One person calmly said to a passing server, “I’ll have the melon this morning,” not saying please or excuse me. Not even waiting until the server stopped to take his order, he just barked it as she passed. Another one snapped his fingers at a passing server saying, “I don’t see any cream on the table.” He did not even bother looking at the server to acknowledge him.

It was all driving Jaynell crazy. She knew since she came from money, she could be a bit much at times, she would not deny that. However, these people made her want to take a hard look at herself through the eyes of the less fortunate.

And Eugenia Fox? She was the worst of them all. When Eugenia visited Jaynell and Clifton in New York, she was reserved, but somewhat friendly. Sometimes she was a bit abrupt, but Jaynell did not let that bother her.

Now, seeing Eugenia in her environment, Jaynell was seeing a very different person, and Jaynell did not like her. She did not like her at all. Eugenia was rude, overbearing, and arrogant. She spoke ill of nearly everyone she encountered. Sometimes behind their back, but often in their presence. Worst of all Eugenia was greedy.

Jaynell witnessed this firsthand the day after Jaynell and Clifton arrived at his mother’s home. Jaynell excused herself to go to the restroom. When she returned, she overheard Eugenia ask Clifton for money to pay her housekeeper. Clifton asked how much did Eugenia pay the elderly woman per hour, and Eugenia said that she paid her $12 an hour because the woman’s daughter moved back in with her. It seemed that the housekeeper’s, daughter’s husband was killed in a work-related accident the year before and she was helping her daughter raise her 7-year-old grandson.

Eugenia also said she wanted to give the woman something extra in her pay for the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday, at which time Clifton gave his mother enough money for November and Decembers pay, including a $400 bonus.

The following morning Jaynell heard Eugenia telling the housekeeper that she was more than generous by giving her $8.50 an hour. She also went on to say that
