CHAPTER NINE

“OKAY, SO WHAT are we doing?” Mia, unsure, looked down at her outfit. “And why am I dressed like I’m about to catch a trapeze?”

“It’s a magician’s-assistant outfit, and you will please do rounds with me to entertain some kids who really need a smile,” Ryan answered.

“How come you get to be dressed normally and even wear your white coat, while I have to look like this? I’m not usually in sequins and feathers,” she countered.

“Hey, I do have the magician’s hat and cape.” Ryan smiled as he drove.

Mia made a face. “That can’t compete with this costume.”

He laughed. “It will, trust me. Drink your coffee and get perky.”

“Perky is something that I’ve never been accused of being,” she murmured.

Ryan knew exactly what she meant. Mia was a woman of logic, facts and figures, and liked things just so. This was his way to shake up her life a little and hopefully show her that the unexpected didn’t have to cause her anxiety. Stepping out of the norm could be good. He’d learned that when he had finally left behind the rigid world his parents had set for him.

Also, being in the hospital at any age was hard enough. For children, it was particularly challenging for them to understand why they couldn’t run and play, why their bodies hurt or why they were so sick. Ryan fully believed that laughter could be truly helpful. He encouraged parents to bring in items from their kids’ bedrooms to make the children feel more comfortable and at home. His antics were designed to make the kids smile as much as possible. He would give everything he had to see them all healed and happy, but of course, life didn’t work that way.

He parked his Land Rover before he helped Mia out of the passenger seat and then grabbed his box of tricks from the trunk. Mia tried desperately to tuck the plume of feathers at her back underneath her cape. He appreciated what a good friend she was and that she didn’t make a run for it.

Once indoors, they took the elevator to his patient floor.

“Good morning, Dr. Cassidy,” the head nurse said as they stopped at the station. “Who do we have here?”

“My lovely assistant and girlfriend, Mia,” Ryan answered smoothly.

“Am I your girlfriend?” Mia questioned.

“Uh, it just slipped out?” Ryan said, scrambling for an explanation.

“We didn’t give it a designation.” Mia fiddled with the cape.

The nurse’s smile stretched wide now. “Do you want to discuss this in private?”

Ryan took Mia’s hand and gave it a quick squeeze. “Mia, this is Nicole, the best nurse a patient could ever hope for. I’d be lost without her expert scheduling.”

“Nice to meet you, Mia.” Nicole reached over the desk to shake her hand. “I see the good doctor has pulled you into his idea of entertainment. I was a clown last week... That didn’t go over so well. Kids don’t like clowns much anymore.”

“I kinda get where they’re coming from,” said Mia, who smiled along with the older woman with friendly hazel eyes.
