THE DECLINE OF HILDERIC

Hilderic was a strongly pro-Roman and pro-Catholic ruler, but his Vandal subjects did not like his policies and considered him a weak king, as he did not have the military abilities of his predecessors. Although he beat down the rebellion of Amalafrida, his position continued to weaken. For several years, Hilderic’s subjects, who valued military prowess, watched his rule with ever-greater impatience. Because of Hilderic’s age, his first cousin once removed, Gelimer, was expected to become king soon. Gelimer was the son of Geilaris, who was the son of Genzon, who was the son of Geiseric. But Gelimer could not wait, and took over more and more of the tasks of the king, which Hilderic, in the spirit of friendliness—and probably to appease the “nationalistic” party—gave him. But it appears from a later letter Gelimer sent to Emperor Justinian that Hilderic might have thought to change the succession rules of Geiseric in order to put one of his popular nephews, Hoamer or Hoageis, on the throne. It does not seem unreasonable for the son of Huneric to try again to change the succession—after all, Hilderic had waited more than half a lifetime to reach his father’s throne.
