At this point for unknown reasons, Soviet sources become almost totally silent regarding the conduct of operations against the encircled German force at Demiansk. The only mention of the ensuing operation appears in the memoirs of a battalion surgeon in the 204th Airborne Brigade of 1st Airborne Corps. The memoir states, ‘…I recalled what Zhikarev said about the upcoming operation. We were expected to operate in the enemy deep rear in the Staraia Russa and Demiansk region, which forces advancing from the front would soon reach.’14 The surgeon went on to note:

No sooner had January passed than began a severe and snowy February of 1942. Conditions on the front intensified. One of the brigades of our corps was air-landed in the Staraia Russa and Demiansk region. We knew that it engaged in bitter combat with the enemy, and the command thought about providing it help, in particular communications and medical personnel. Thus, in the second half of February, it was decided to throw in a large group of sub-machine gunners and signalmen, with whom I was sent, to help doctors working in the region of concentrated wounded.
