Armed and Dangerous

The fully armed pirate would have been an awesome sight. His cutlass or ‘hanger’ would be hung constantly at his side. He would have worn broad leather cross-belts, usually over a dirty velvet coat, on which he hung his ‘apostles’. Swinging at his sides would be a number of pistols, each hung on a silken sash and number of knives would be shoved in his belt. Initially he would carry a musket, but this would be tossed aside when boarding.

He would wear a sweatband or kerchief tied around his forehead to keep sweat out of his eyes. Over it, he would wear a tricorn hat, if he had one. His face would be blackened with the powder from his musket or the ship’s great guns. He would certainly be unwashed. If he had been at sea for any length of time, his teeth would have dropped out and he would be unlikely to possess a full set of eyes, ears, hands and feet. Any resemblance to Errol Flynn or Douglas Fairbanks is, frankly, unlikely.
