What is Naturalism?

Perspectives on the term

In broad terms, Naturalism is generally understood as that artistic direction that strives for direct emulation of nature and the particular aspects of natural or social reality that the creative artist is seeking to reflect, in a manner ‘true to nature’, in his or her own literary, visual or musical medium. Specifically, it refers to that particular literary trend that arose in the decade between 1890 and 1900, a trend that perceived itself as ‘modern’ in the artistic sense and was heralded by the younger generation in particular as a ‘revolution’ in art and literature. One aspect of this that should not be overlooked is that for the first time since the days of Realism a European dimension entered the field of vision in artistic theory. The young generation of intellectuals, aware of the coming ‘turn of the century’ were actively involved in this.
