CHAPTER EIGHT
SATURDAY MORNING, CHRISTOPHER woke early and quickly put the foldaway bed back into the sofa and straightened the pillows. He had more energy than heâd had in a while and figured heâd make his famous pancakes for everyoneâs breakfast. In the kitchen, he found the ingredients and quickly stirred the batter. In the refrigerator, he also found bacon. He prepped a sheet pan of bacon and placed it in the oven before greasing a griddle for the pancakes.
Heâd made two stacks of pancakes when he heard the footsteps behind him. He turned, expecting Aunt Sarah, but found Penny standing there in a hoodie and boxers. She yawned and rubbed her eyes. âYouâre making breakfast?â
âDid I wake you?â
âThe smell of bacon is the best alarm ever.â She took a seat at the counter on one of the stools, propping one bare foot on the top rung. âPlease tell me that you also made coffee.â
âI canât start my day without a shot of caffeine.â He poured a cup and offered it to her.
She took the cup and inhaled the aroma before taking a sip. âAmbrosia.â She got off the stool and retrieved a carton of half-and-half from the fridge. âBut I like it sweet and creamy.â
The words reminded him of her. She was so sweet, trying to soothe and comfort his kids. Sheâd even tried to reach some kind of understanding with Elijah, who hadnât made it easy on her. Christopher topped off his mug with coffee before he returned the carafe to the machine. âWhat do you like on your pancakes?â
âButter and maple syrup, of course.â
He placed a stack of three pancakes on a plate alongside three pieces of bacon. âLet me know what you think of these pancakes. My kids will tell you that Iâm famous for them.â
She buttered the cakes, then poured a generous amount of syrup over them. Taking her fork, she nodded at him before slicing through the stack and putting a bite in her mouth. She closed her eyes as she chewed and swallowed, but she didnât say anything.
He couldnât wait any longer for her reaction. âWell?â
âThat. Was. Amazing.â She took her fork and stabbed more pancake. âYou could get rich off of these if you decided to sell them.â
Her words of praise pleased him, and he turned back to the griddle to pour three more circles of batter.
She took a slice of bacon and bit into the strip. âWhere did you learn to make them like this?â
âI worked my way through college in a diner as a waiter, but Iâd fill in behind the grill if they were shorthanded. The short-order cook eventually taught me his pancake recipe.â
âThank goodness he did.â She finished her pancakes and eyed the other stacks waiting. âDo you think I could have a couple more of those before I have to leave for work?â
He put another stack of three on her empty plate. âI can always make more.â
Aunt Sarah stepped into the kitchen, sniffing the air. âDo I smell
