Remembering Toby's comment when I had spoken of Sebastian Ryder buying pictures as an investment, I felt it was best not to encourage the prospect, and said hastily, "Oh, I think he just painted me for practice, sir. He mentioned scraping it off to use the canvas again." I did not say the suggestion had been made jokingly.

"There'll be other pictures, no doubt," said Mr. Ryder, and then to my relief the subject was dropped.

A few days later, when we were in a growler returning from an afternoon's outing to the Tower of London, Jane said, "Did you know Papa has invited your friend Mr. Kent to join the river party next week, Hannah?"
