Later that evening, after a tutoring session with Seb and hours spent polishing her resume and sending job applications out to the far corners of the world, Jessica called her sister.

“I am so glad you called,” Berkley said by way of greeting.

“What’s up?” Jessica asked, concerned.

“Oh, nothing,” Berkley said. “I’m just bored out of my fucking mind. Can you believe they’ve got me on bed rest for the next two months until this baby is born?”

“Actually?” Jessica said. “Yeah, I can.”

“Traitor,” Berkley grumbled.

“Berk, you have placenta previa,” she said. “Excuse me for wanting you and my nephew to be alive and healthy.”

With a sigh, Berkley said, “You’re right. Now what’s up with you? Why did you call?”

“You and Brent went through some really bullshit miscommunication issues,” Jessica said without preamble.

“Thanks for the reminder,” Berkley said dryly before Jessica could continue.

“But you worked through it, and now you’re happily married with that sweet baby on the way.”

“Is there a question in there somewhere?”

“How do you approach having big conversations with him?”

“Such as…?”

“Such as…I started applying for jobs today. A few in the States, but mostly, I’m still planning on teaching English as a second language, so the majority of what I applied for is out of the country. South America, Mexico, Spain, and Russia.”

“Russia?” Berkley asked, surprised. “I suppose it’s time you finally put all those hours on Mango Languages to good use.”

“Exactly,” Jessica said with a smile. “But the problem is…”

“Jack,” her sister said sympathetically.

“Yes, Jack. We’ve only just gotten back together, or whatever it is we’re doing, and the thought of losing him again scares me more than anything.”

“That’s a normal reaction to have,” Berkley said. “You waited a long time for this. But you’ve also waited a long time to chase your dreams.”

“I know,” Jessica said, dragging a frustrated hand through her hair. “That’s what makes this so hard. I want them both. I think I need them both.”

“This had always been a sticking point for me and Brent at the beginning of our relationship,” Berkley said. “My career was more important to me than anything at that point in my life. I didn’t spend seven years in college and law school to throw it all away because some guy walked into my life and told me I didn’t have to work if I didn’t want to. I did want to work, and I still do. But Brent and I learned to compromise. His money is our money, and my money is our money. When I decided to go part-time at work and go back to school to open my own agency, he fully supported me. Brent is my biggest fan, and he realizes now how important it is to me to contribute to this family.”

“Is there a point to this story?” Jessica asked, only partially joking. She was all too aware of the struggles her sister and brother-in-law had endured in the early days of their relationship.

“Yes, you little shit. What I’m trying to say is that Brent supports me in whatever I want to do.
