Personal Care Products

I can’t possibly go over every single product or even category and talk about potential problems and alternatives regarding personal care products. Nor would anyone want to read all of that! Instead, I can talk about some potentially harmful and unnecessary ingredients and how we can mitigate or avoid them while still having wonderful and effective products, all without breaking the bank.

As I mentioned, dozens upon dozens of personal care products live in a typical bathroom. Many of them contain the same problematic ingredients, so while, for example, phthalates may not be much to fret over for occasional use (although many would argue they’re not safe in any amount), most people layer on phthalate after phthalate through a variety of products and throughout the day. Most conventional personal care and toiletry products contain several of these concerning ingredients in some combination.

Let’s look at some of the most common offenders and some that can pose a bigger threat even in lesser amounts:

Artificial dyes

BHA and BHT

Bisphenols

Formaldehyde

Fragrance/parfum

Heavy metals, including lead and aluminum

Parabens

PEGs (polyethylene glycols and polysorbates)

Petroleum

PFAS

Phthalates

Retinyl palmitate a.k.a. retinoic acid or vitamin A

SLS (sodium laureth sulfate)

Triclosan
