After Pedro went home, grieving for his friend, I wondered about something.
Why had Diego rung the cathedral bells? Was it simply the irrational act of a mind possessed by an evil spirit? Or was it intentional?
I soon had my answer.
Screams came from behind the cathedral. I revved my motor and drove the scooter through the alley beside the edifice. Behind it was a building that didn't have an obvious association with the cathedral, but a group of men stood outside it, huddled over something on the asphalt-covered ground. One wore a bathrobe; others were in shorts and T-shirts. One was dressed in the black shirt and clerical collar of a priest.
It was then I realized the building was the clergy house. Diego had rung the bells to draw the priests out of whichever building served as their living quarters. But why?
I got off the scooter and hurried to the priests.
"Has anyone been hurt?" I asked.
They looked up, surprised to see me. In the center of their circle was another man in black, sitting on the ground. When he saw me, he got to his feet.
âA maniac attacked me. He actually bit me,â the priest said. âBut Iâll be okay.â
Wounds on his neck were healing quickly. More quickly than they should in a human. He placed his hand against his neck to hide what was happening from the others.
A vampire priest. If there was a vampire nun, why not a vampire priest? Diego must have known or suspected that one existed.
But he had failed to kill this one, which I assume had been his intention.
âDo you need me to call nine-one-one?â I asked.
âNo thanks,â the vampire priest said.
âI already called them,â said a colleague.
âBe sure to disinfect those wounds,â I said before jumping back on my scooter.
Had Diego killed Mother Kate? It seemed odd to do so, since she was a vessel enacting the will of the inquisitor who was possessing Diego. Helga, he almost killed because she got in his way. Then, he tried to kill a priest.
The question was, who would be next?
I called Samson and told him what had happened.
âListen to me, go home and get some sleep. Do not go looking for him. It will be dawn soon and heâll go to ground.â
âAnd we should look for him then.â
âThereâs no âweâ here. Iâm the cop. Iâll do it.â
âWait a minute,â I said. âYouâre not my boss. Weâre not talking about arresting a human criminal. This is a supernatural creature, and youâre no more qualified to fight him than I am.â
âYouâre not Buffy the Vampire Slayer.â
âAnd youâre not Van Helsing. We can team up and do this together, or I can go on my own.â
âAs long as he doesnât attack regular humans, this is a matter for the vampire guild to handle.â
âBut they sleep during the day. Weâre going to look for a sleeping vampire. Together.â
Was âtogetherâ a Freudian slip? Was I going to continue flirting with Samson without knowing what I wanted? It wasnât fair to him. There was chemistry between us, no doubt.
