Chapter 3: Catching Your Fish

Trout fishing can be a very challenging venture especially when you’re doing it in stream or river situations. Although you may opt to go easy on yourself by catching stocked trout –– trout that are planted on fish farms –– both methods are challenging in their own rights.

Trout Behavior

The first thing you want to consider when fishing trout is its behavior. This fish lives in cold and clear waters, which means that if it can spot you easily, it will be less likely to take your bait. For this reason it is recommended to wear drab-colored clothes when fishing as the goal is not to stand out in any way. You should keep this in mind when you are fishing for native trout, but it doesn’t matter as much if you’re going for stocked trout.

The rainbow trout is well-known for its acrobatic stints, or its tail-walking, and this is one of the things that excite anglers when fishing them. While there are many ways to catch trout, novice anglers start out by catching them using a light spinning tackle. The more experienced anglers use fly rod or they do the fishing in crystal clear waters to make things even more challenging.

The brown trout, on the other hand, must be pursued with patience. This is because your shadow will cause them to hide for at least an hour or two. It is common to find them in the deepest pools, but they do move to the shallow waters to feed in the early morning and in the late afternoon.

Covering Your Scent

To drive trout closer to your bait, you have to make sure that you have clean hands. If your hands are not clean enough it might end up putting foreign scent on your bait. When this happens, there is a huge chance that the trout will not consider even going near it.

To ensure that your hands are free of foreign scents, wash your hands using an odor neutralizing soap before you go fishing. If you don’t have such soap with you, then you just have to rely on nature. Rub your hands on dirt and grass and repeat this every two hours. These tips will get rid of the foreign scents on your hands.

Preparing the Bait

There are different ideas regarding the best bait for catching trout. Of course, you will need to have good fishing equipment to get started.

One of the best baits for trout is the night crawler, as worms may be hard to cast because of their rather small size. Minnows and crayfish are also recommended. To invite the fish to these baits, you can set up lures such as streamers and wobblers as they are known to attract trout and other freshwater fish.

Naturally, all of these will be useless if your set-up is faulty. Remember that the purpose of the bait is to appeal to the fish’s appetite, while lures are utilized to excite fish and to cause them to attack. As for your
