I spent the remainder of the school year—both days—in detention, except for any finals I had to take. Frank remained resolutely silent and Sammy was nowhere to be seen.
A new form of entertainment seemed to have been established called Watch Alex Eat. By the time lunch would roll around, my snacks were long gone. All eyes would be on me as I moved through the cafeteria serving line and piled on the plates of food. At home, I’d still be chowing down long after everyone else at the table had finished. Mom and Gram were too polite to say anything or get up before I was finished, but not Phil, of course. He constantly griped about how much it cost to feed me, probably with some justification, but he just had to keep making references to the hog farm. I could do without that.
I met again with Bob Friday afternoon at Gram’s flat.
“The tests I ran on your blood and muscle tissue look good, but there were a couple of interesting results,” he began.
“Such as?” I asked.
“For one, your muscle fibers are much denser than average. This is why you’re heavier than another person of the same size.”
“I guess that makes sense.”
“It also means you’re a great deal stronger,” he continued. “When you’re down at the farm, I’ll be able to do a much more complete physical exam. That should answer a lot of questions.”
“What kind of questions?”
“For example, are you still growing? Has your bone density increased along with your muscle mass? Are there any structural changes to your brain to account for the alleviation of your autism?”
“You really think I could grow more?” I asked with some trepidation.
“Based on the blood work, I think it’s highly likely,” he said. “It’s not unheard of for some men to still be growing into their early twenties. I had a high school friend that grew two inches in the army.”
“I’m not really sure if that’s a good thing,” I said.
“That’s the wrong way to look at things,” Gram interjected. “You work with the gifts you’ve been given, and I think you’re very lucky. You’re tall, good looking, strong and smart. Why wouldn’t you want a little more of that?”
“You think I’m good looking?” I’m pretty sure I was blushing.
“I’m sure all the girls will be throwing themselves at you.”
Sooner or later I was going to have to rain on that parade.
“You’re so much more engaged with people.”
That was true. I used to go through life looking down at my feet, and Frank and Patty were the only ones I spoke to outside of class.
“Let’s check your weight,” Bob said as he put down his electronic scale. I stepped on and Bob looked down at the display. “Aha!” he said. “Just as I thought.
I looked down and I couldn’t believe my eyes— three hundred forty-nine and a half pounds.
“That’s thirty pounds in less than a week!” I blurted.
“In a way, it’s not surprising,” Bob answered. “I think your muscles, bones tendons and other connective tissues have been getting denser and stronger.
