TESS, STILL THE GORDONS’ NANNY, was back in New York for another summer and came back to Galveston to visit. She arrived just as Chris quit, bursting with news. It concerned an online beau.

Still looking for an American spouse, she had placed an ad on an online dating site in Abu Dhabi and drawn a response from an American businessman. “I am the mysterious man from your dreams, the man whose eyes spoke to you,” Christopher Daniels wrote. “I’m generous, loving and lovable, sensitive, faithful, kind, fun, intelligent and erudite. . . . I can be very bitchy when pushed, but I cry easily, too.”

She hadn’t expected that. “I read your email Chris, and I was so impressed,” she replied. “I could say I’m a good catch!”

He lived in Glasgow with a six-year-old son after losing his wife and daughter in a car accident. He and Tess had been writing almost every day.

Tess recounted their digital courtship to Rosalie with feigned indifference. “If he’s serious, I’m serious; if he’s just playing, I’m just playing.” But her excitement was too great to conceal. After five weeks of emails and two phone calls, he was coming to New York to see her.
