"Who's cockamamy idea was it to add rum?" I give each of my friends a dirty look as the sun streams through my dark sunglasses as we stand outside Lillie's quaint little house.

"Yours." Sera reminds me more of Rose than ever. I decided over coffee this morning it was her facial features, while they don't actually look that alike, the shapes of their eyes and mouths are similar, but this morning, I'm convinced it's their ability to state the obvious as though it's an Earth-shattering bombshell.

Paige bangs on Lillie's door. "Open up, Lillie."

"Not so loud." I shudder.

"I have to get to work." Lillie steps outside and tries to stride past us but flinches when she looks at me. "Why do you all look ill? Are you unwell?"

"Yes." I lean against her wall. "The light hurts my eyes, please, can we go inside, out of the sun?"

"We can go to the town hall." Lillie walks away.

"Lillie, I really gotta pee," I whisper-shout.

"You are middle-aged, your bladder is not as stable as it used to be." Lillie marches back and throws open her front door. It's hard to be offended, especially when she's right and you're too desperate to argue.

I take my time, which will leave her trapped with everyone else. Her bathroom is small but functional and full of plants.

Going back, Lillie is still holding her front door open, glaring between Sera making tea and coffee, Paige openly examining the pictures of Fin that cover nearly every surface, and Harley conjuring some cupcakes.

We squeeze onto the small sofa, which might be a large chair, and start chatting.

"It's time to go," Lillie says from her threshold.

"Or not. It is Saturday. Come and be a good hostess."

"The town hall is manned every day." Lillie checks her watch. "I can't be late."

"What a difficult situation." Paige shakes her head, giving Lillie all the fake sympathy she can muster.

"Wait a minute," I spring to Lillie and instantly regret jostling my stomach. "Do you work every single day?"

"I am needed by the people." She frowns at me with no real emotion at all. Even her hair is comatose.

"That is not acceptable." Anger disintegrates my hangover and exhaustion, despite saying it was time to sleep last night, we laid in the dark chatting for hours.

"It is the way of Whispering."

"Then Whispering needs a new bloody way." The innate need to guide the whole damn island and everyone living here to a more sustainable and fair way of life takes a grip on my heart. From the Emporium to the town hall to Obscurity Forest, it all needs to change for the better.

"The Merchant cannot have that opinion." Lillie cocks her head at me.

"I can and will have any opinion I deem to be the right one." I take her arm and try to drag her to a seat. "And right now, it's that you deserve a day off."

"I mean, the Merchant literally cannot think that," Lillie declares, staring at me with the intensity of a hunter. "Their judgment on the island does not go further than how everything interacts with the Emporium.
