“I’m mad you didn’t tell me earlier,” Gena said. She stared ahead at the lake and passed me the joint. “But I get it. I’m not actually mad. I just hate that I could’ve been there for you during high school. I feel bad for not knowing.”

“There was no way for you to know, so don’t feel bad about that.”

“No, I know. I just feel like things could’ve been so different.”

“Yeah. They could’ve been.” I took the joint from her hand and pulled on it. The burning in my lungs spread to my throat. I leaned over to cough, catching it in my elbow to try to dampen the noise.

At the restaurant, Gena had been quiet for longer I’d hoped for. She asked a few questions, then told me to look at a party walking through the door, changing the subject for the remainder of the meal. We got ice cream to go and rode around listening to music with the windows down, even though it was winter. She pulled up to our spot at the lake and dug around in her glove compartment, before finding a leftover joint.

“Time to celebrate,” she said.

“Oh my God, you’re dumb. Hand it over.” She did so, before grabbing a blanket from the back seat.

We sat there for a while, taking turns taking hits on the joint, letting the gentle waves from the lake fill the lulls in conversation.

“That Cameron guy is a douchebag. I know it’s hard, but try not to let him get to you too much.”

“I’m trying, but easier said than done,” I said. “I just can’t figure out why someone would waste so much time and energy on getting to know someone, just to pretend like they don’t exist two days later.”

“Some people are just like that. But that’s a bigger reflection of who they are as people, and not what you have to offer. His actions say nothing about you and everything about him,” Gena said.

I didn’t want to face the truth, but Gena was right. And Paola was right, too. Through it all, Cameron only wanted one thing from me. He was nice while it benefitted him, and when it was no longer useful, he threw me away like a used pair of socks. My heart was starting to harden in the areas where it had been broken, as sadness was replaced by anger.

“There’s a little pond on campus that they call a lake,” I said, intentionally changing the subject. “I’d forgotten how absolutely massive real lakes are, though.”

“You’re lucky. My school is in the middle of the city; I have to drive an hour to get anywhere outdoors.”

“As much as we wanted to get out of this town, I do kind of miss it.”

“Me too,” Gena agreed.

“Not the people, but the place itself. I miss knowing every road and every place there is to go to. I still haven’t felt like anywhere on campus is mine yet. Like we have this spot, and the coffee shop down the road, but nothing on campus has that same feel.
