Chapter Twenty

Di

Rebecca collapsed after subduing Christian with her Word Spell magic. Jovie and I rushed to her aid, as the guys including Nagel and Sir Kenneth contained Christian and dragged him down the tunnel. The world wasn’t on fire, but it sure felt like it was.

The ground shook as we ran down the tunnel. The cavern rumbled and thundered behind us. It sounded as if the entire structure was collapsing in on itself. We got out mostly unscathed. Well, except for Starr—I tried not to think too hard on that, but the reality was, there wasn’t any point continuing on in the Games if Starr was dead. If she died, we all died, of that truth I had no doubt.

An enormous explosion sent us sprinting away from what very well could be our only exit—not to be doom and gloom or anything. Everything went dark as the last wisps of light vanished, and it brought us to a standstill. Or at least it brought me to a standstill because I wasn’t blessed with supernatural sight.

“Anyone see or hear anything?” I whispered, unwilling to continue forward with Rebecca until we knew it was safe and the ground wouldn’t drop out from under us because we already went through that and it wasn’t fun the first time.

“It feels familiar,” Jovie said.

Ben sniffed the air. “Yeah, it does.”

“That’s because it’s where we started,” Nagel said.

Coda gave a sharp exhalation. “What do you mean where we started?”

“I mean, exactly that. We’re at the beginning again. Look,” he said pointing his finger. As if by magic, a single torch lit casting a faint light at the three tunnels in front of us.

“Well, we know not to go down Tunnel One,” Rebecca said.

“That we do,” I added. “That leaves two tunnels, and no Starr.”

“I won’t leave without her,” Christian said, crossing his arms as if the rest of us planned on grabbing them and dragging him with us.

“None of us will,” Frank added. “Besides, the riddle, guidebook, stone tablet… whatever you want to call it specifically instructed us to unite and face three choices.”

Sir Kenneth walked over to the stone tablet. His chest rose and fell as he studied it. “Face doesn’t necessary mean complete.”

“Good point,” Nagel said. “From my point of view, we faced three challenges in the first tunnel. Each one tested our mettle.”

“And lead to consequences,” Jovie said. “The remaining two tunnels will also lead to consequences. The question is, what type of consequences, because I, for one, don’t want to find myself in the middle of a Rock Giant battle again.”

“Or in a collapsing cavern,” Frank added.

“Or in a cave with Sami, gasoline, and a match,” Starr said appearing out of thin air looking much worse for wear, which for Starr meant she was still five times more beautiful than the rest of us—she just wasn’t ten times more.

Christian spun around and wrapped her into a hug. “What happened?”

“Long story,” she sighed. “Let’s just say that Sami’s time in the dungeons didn’t improve her personality at all.
