Who would have done such a thing? The only person Lilith could think of was Bronson, but it didn’t make sense. He’d been vaguely threatening at the theater, but she’d believed that to be more intimidation than anything else. She couldn’t consider him capable of such violence.

Or maybe he didn’t want her to think him capable.

As they rode to her club in a hired coach, Lilith snuggled against Gabriel’s side and knew she should confess her suspicions, but she just couldn’t. She knew Gabriel well enough to know how he would react to such news. He’d insist that she close her club, spouting that gaming bred this kind of trouble. Or else he’d go after Bronson himself, and Lilith didn’t want or need him to fight her battles for her. It would only make things worse for her if Bronson thought she had the Angelic Earl on her side, and it wouldn’t look good for Gabe in Parliament if he took such a stand for her.

Not that it should bother her if his reputation were tarnished, but she didn’t want it to happen because of Bronson. He wasn’t worth Gabriel’s leaving his pedestal.

No, she would first discover whether or not Bronson was responsible, and then she would tell Gabriel, if there was anything to tell.

Dear God, what if the accident had been more serious? What if Gabriel had gotten hurt? She wouldn’t be able to live with herself if anything happened to him.

She loved him.

It was more of a disappointment than a shock. She’d loved him so dearly once, it made sense that part of her would still have feelings for him. Whether those feelings were for the boy he once was or the man he’d become was inconsequential. Perhaps he had similar feelings for her; she wasn’t certain it even mattered.

One of them was going to have to turn away. Their goals were such that they could not have it both ways.

It would hurt when she lost him again. Possibly it would hurt more than it had before, but that didn’t stop her from wanting him. If anything, tonight’s incident only made her want him more.

“Come inside,” she murmured as the carriage pulled up outside Mallory’s.

Something in her expression must have told him how much his acquiescence meant to her. He simply nodded, not saying a word.

“Lady Lilith!” Latimer exclaimed when they walked through the door.

Lilith could only imagine how she and Gabriel must appear. Bruised, dirty and disheveled, they must look as though they’d been to Hell and back.

“Not now, Latimer,” she told her wide-eyed servant with a shake of her head. “I’ll explain in the morning.”

Gabriel followed her down the corridor and up the stairs in silence. Lilith didn’t speak, either. They didn’t have to. The air between them was charged with things that didn’t need to be spoken to be understood.

Tossing her shawl onto a chair as they entered her private apartments, Lilith went straight to the liquor cabinet and poured two stiff drinks of good scotch whiskey.
