Chapter 15

She leaned back against the side of the wagon, trying to get comfortable as it jarred her up and down along the road. Every bounce of the wagon made her suck in her breath as she desperately tried to hold herself still. She hoped Brooks had passed out from the pain she knew he was in. He’d groaned several times since they’d left town.

He had his head and shoulders resting in her lap in the back of the wagon, while Lydia drove back home. She wished she'd known how to handle driving the team pulling the wagon so Lydia could've stayed with her brother in the back. But Fiona thought this was the least she could do to try and help the man who’d taken a bullet because of her.

But as she sat here peeking down at the face of the man lying with his head in her lap, she struggled with the emotions she was feeling.

The day had been so full of turmoil. She’d realized her father hadn’t sent the money she needed, then ended up marrying a man she'd only met because he'd won her in a bet. As if that hadn’t been enough to send her world spinning, that same man ended up being shot and almost killed because he’d married her.

Looking down, the lines were etched on the face she was holding in her lap as he clenched his eyes closed in pain again. She wanted to reach down and caress his face to try and ease some of his discomfort, but even though, in the eyes of the law she was his wife, she knew that had little reality in truth.

Unable to stop herself as the wagon jostled over another rock, making Brooks grasp his side in pain, she let her hand gently touch his cheek. As soon as her fingers met the skin on his face, he turned his head slightly to be closer. The lines eased, and she thought maybe he’d actually fallen asleep.

She removed her hand in an effort to get more comfortable, but he reached up and pulled it back to rest on his cheek. He hadn't even opened his eyes. “Don't move. I'm finally feeling like my insides aren't going to be ripped out with ever blasted bump of this wagon.”

His voice sounded strained, and she realized just how much control he was using to hold the pain at bay.

She left her hand on his cheek, feeling the warmth of the skin, and the sharpness of the stubble he always wore on his jaw. Her skin tingled where it touched his, and she had to fight the urge not to caress his face to give him comfort.

She may be his wife in name, but she didn't think she had the right to do that.

Fiona started to feel uncomfortable in the silence, with only the squeaking of the old wagon and the sound of the horse’s hooves on the road surrounding them. Lydia was having to concentrate hard on driving the wagon, something she didn't have to do often.
