When Corey told Kyle to wait for the rest of them back at the Brookview house, Ann was relieved that Kyle had the sense not to argue. As the Crew began to strike equipment and wrap cables, the rest of them congregated on the bridge.

“I would like to apologize for that,” said Corey to Hannah. “Obviously we can’t have Kyle Lathey on location while we’re shooting. I’ll do my best to make sure that will be the case going forward. If I can ensure his absence, I hope you’ll be willing to put in a good word with Ms. Pepperidge to allow us to come back to Brookview another day to continue our conversation with Dr. Dorn, and I hope you’ll be willing to participate.”

Hannah looked with irritation toward Kyle’s retreating form. “If we can ensure his absence, I would consider it.”

“Thank you.” Corey scanned the area, his gaze passing through the space where Leo stood next to Hannah’s chair. “And Dr. Dorn …?”

“Yes, I would consider it as well,” said Leo.

Garrick conveyed Leo’s response to Corey.

Corey turned to Ann. “If we can get approval for a return visit, can you come back to Brookview and let Dr. Dorn know when we’ll be shooting again?”

“Sure.”

“Okay, thanks everybody. Let’s get packed up,” said Corey.

He went to help the Crew, while Garrick retired a little way down the path, his hands clasped behind him. Ann, Hannah, and Leo remained on the bridge.

“I hope the police aren’t looking at Jonathan as a suspect in Shelby’s disappearance,” said Leo. “He’s been with SMT for years, and his record—professionally and personally—is exemplary. We run thorough background checks on anyone we’re considering hiring.”

Ann repeated his words for Hannah’s benefit.

Hannah nodded. “I will certainly vouch for Jonathan with the authorities.” She sighed. “It’s upsetting that Mr. Lathey seems both to be implicating Jonathan and to be continuing to propagate this rumor about Shelby and Leo. I wish we could nip that in the bud. It’s not like she was looking around for a boyfriend. I believe she and Jonathan had been dating for several months. She was always friendly to everyone—was well liked by her fellow researchers—but she was closest to Jonathan. If she were sharing personal information with anyone, it would be with him, and he says he’s unaware of anything that would shed light on her disappearance.”

“Yes, if anyone could share useful information with the authorities, it would be Jonathan,” said Leo, “although I don’t doubt that he’s shared as much as he knows with them. If the authorities are suspicious of him in any way, that must be rubbing salt in the wound. Hannah, will you make sure he’s taken care of?”

When Ann had conveyed Leo’s request, Hannah nodded. “Of course.”

“Let’s hope that there’s some alternative explanation for Shelby’s disappearance than that she fell from the cliff,” said Leo. “Her inner strength and resolve far exceed her size—we shouldn’t count her out until we have more definitive evidence than a scrap of cloth. However, she would no doubt be traumatized by what she’s been through.
