CHAPTER FOURTEEN

After being swiftly and summarily denied access to the only thing Idina had been trying to find through her personnel search, she gave up trying to make the rest of her weekend productive. The green journal lay on the built-in desk on the other side of her room, occasionally letting out a puff of green mist she somehow only saw from the corner of her eye before it disappeared. Given that behavior, she had difficulty justifying leaving her room to take her mind off the strange new turn of events after her coffee date with Major Hines.

Everything felt like it was happening all at once, and at the same time, Idina felt completely stuck. She couldn’t focus on drawing. She couldn’t get up and leave her room to go for a walk because she didn’t want to leave the journal alone if it started having minor copycat episodes as she did. Plus, walking around post in her civvies with her field rucksack on her back stuffed with bare essentials and a glowing journal wasn’t exactly appealing, either.

So she spent the rest of that Sunday night eating microwaved Ramen noodles in her room and compulsively checking her email every half-hour in between bursts of absently streaming ridiculous, pointless TV shows on her phone. Even then, Idina couldn’t bring herself to write Reggie a new email, and directly calling the man was out of the question.

If the one person who knew about her abilities and her family’s history while also being willing to talk to her about both—at least at one point in time—didn’t want to answer her past emails, that was fine. Idina hadn’t outright asked the man anything yet, only vague questions that skirted around her burning curiosity. She wasn’t sure she could have a conversation with him right now.

Most of that, she knew, came from the fact that she’d have to tell him about her transfer to HHC three weeks ago. She’d have to explain her knee-jerk decision to leave the demolition range and her unit and post altogether, followed by her insubordination toward all her commanding officers after her arrest. Because that would never make sense to Reggie in and of itself, she’d then have to explain what had happened on the range a little over a month ago. That meant admitting to the visions, the dreams, and her abilities acting up in ways that helped her immensely and dragged her down into a pit, depending on the day.

I’m not a liar. But I can’t tell him everything right now, and not telling him is basically a lie too.

So she focused instead on trying not to think about anything until the morning, when she’d step into her new role as Major Hines’ daily driver and his spy on her unit.

Whatever his intentions were with taking their odd relationship to the next level, this didn’t feel like a promotion.
