Chapter Eight

What was supposed to be a quick stop in the morning after her chores and before work turned into an hour-long search for the goats. The only person she could find to help her was Lula, who had stopped by to care for her horse. Even though she grumbled and complained about not having enough time with him to begin with, she let Jo pull her away to look. Although she was only marginally helpful at best – she spent more time trying to peer over the crime scene tape than she did looking for evidence of their quarry, Jo appreciated the company. At last, however, she had to admit that she was leaving without finding the goats that day.

“I just don’t understand what happened,” she said, not for the first time, as she walked with Lula into the stable. The other woman wanted to say goodbye to her horse, then the two of them were going to get lunch. Jo figured she owed it to the other woman for helping her look when she could have been out riding instead.

“They’ll turn up,” Lula said, sounding irritated. “If you’re really worried about them, go hang a flyer up at the grocery store or post about them online. I’m sure this isn’t the first time they’ve escaped.”

“Still, I can’t help but feel it’s my fault. I should have just taken them home with me that day.”

“You couldn’t have known they were going to up and vanish,” Lula said. She patted the horse’s neck, pressed a kiss to his muzzle, then turned away from the stall. “Come on, you promised me a meal. Besides, I’m pretty sure you’ve already been here over an hour. That officer down the driveway won’t be thrilled.”

Jo winced. She wished she could stay longer, but she didn’t want to press her luck. Instead, she would just come back tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after that if she had to. She was going to find those goats.

“All right, let’s get going. Are you fine with going to the diner?”

“Sounds good to me,” the other woman said. She walked with Jo out to where the vehicles were parked. “I’ll meet you there. I might be a minute or two behind – I’ve got a call to make first, and I don’t want to do it while I’m driving.”

“All right. I’ll get us a table. I’ll see you there.”

Jo had a call she wanted to make, too, but that could wait until she got to the diner. She wanted to tell Nick what had happened. He would, at least, be sympathetic with her, even if he didn’t feel the same responsibility toward the goats that she did.

After she got to the diner and found a table, she spent the next few minutes on the phone with him until she spotted Lula outside. Saying a quick goodbye and promising to see him soon, she waved the other woman over as she came in the door.

“I’m starved,” she said as she sat down across from Jo.
