Chapter Twelve
When Frederick returned to his hotel, the front desk clerk handed him a telegram. It was from Karolina:
âAnna has been arrested. Please come home.â
-Karolina
Frederick was in shock. âWhy was Anna arrested?â He reread the telegram several times.
The front desk clerk saw the shock on Frederickâs face. âAre you well?â He asked.
âNo, I have trouble at home and must leave immediately,â Frederick answered.
âNot to worry, Herr. My staff will secure a ticket for you on the next train leaving for Hamburg. From there you can purchase passage on a steamer ship to New York City,â the front desk clerk said.
Frederick thanked him and went to his room to pack. He returned to the lobby of the hotel and a carriage was waiting for him to take him to the Görlitzer Bahnhof train station. He handed the front desk clerk a note for Richard Cordwell and climbed into the carriage to the train station. When he arrived in Hamburg, Frederick exchanged his ticket to London for a first-class ticket to New York City on the SS Frisia, the fastest steamship in the Hamburg-American Line.
Meanwhile, New York City newspapers printed sensational headlines about Annaâs arrest and her upcoming obscenity trial. Prominent members of New York Cityâs High Society proclaimed Annaâs behavior scandalous and urged prosecutors to quickly bring her to trial to stop the daily sensational headlines. Newspaper reporters harassed Anna and Karolina whenever they ventured outside of their home.
After 11 days of traveling, including steaming through North Atlantic rough seas, Frederick arrived home in New York City. When he walked in the front door of his home, his wife fell into his arms and sobbed. âOh, Frederick,â Anna tried to speak in between bouts of weeping. âOh, Frederick, what have I done? I can be put in jail for five or ten years and they will fine us $5000!â
âMy darling, I am here now,â Frederick said as he stroked her hair. âTell me exactly what happened.â
Anna stopped crying and said, âThey came into our home and arrested me! They shackled my wrists together like a common criminal. And when they took me to the police station the prosecutor told me I broke the new federal obscenity law when I received an obscene, immoral, and indecent pamphlet in the mail. All I did was receive medical information from our doctor!â Anna began to sob again.
Frederick tried to soothe her. âWhat pamphlet did you receive?â He asked.
Anna picked up the pamphlet from a table. The pamphlet contained advice on contraception including medicine, devices, or surgery to prevent pregnancy. âHere it is. It is from our doctor, Frederick!â Anna handed him the pamphlet. âThere is nothing obscene or immoral about a womanâs health! You should read what they are writing about me in the newspapers! Karolina and I have not been able to leave our house without being mobbed by newspaper reporters!â
Frederick took one look at the pamphlet and gave it back to her. âIs this all? Donât worry, my sweet,â Frederick caressed her hair again.
