There being nothing further to be done at the squadron, I returned to Amberly. As luck would have it, I ran into Barbara on the way to my room. Not that I counted this particularly as a stroke of good fortune. Barbara seemed determined to hunt me down at every opportunity and I was, after all, in her domain.

“Angus, you’re back early,” she said, sounding pleased.

“So you see.”

The next statement came without a shred of hesitation. “You can come and spend some time with me, then.”

“Now, Barbara!” I said warningly.

“I won’t take no for an answer.” She pouted marvellously when she wanted to, and she did so then.

I relented. “Fine, we can have a chat if you like.”

“I want more than a chat, darling, you know that, but it will do for starters.”

I repaired with her to her pink salon and took a shot of whisky. It had been an eventful day, and I needed a restorative. Besides, I wasn’t going out again, nor intending to fly. I sipped the single malt gratefully and silently toasted Lord Amberly for his liquor cabinet.

“What shall we chat about?” said Barbara, looking at me expectantly.

I missed having Angelica to confide in. It had been one of the highlights of my day. Barbara was perhaps second best, so I elected to tell her about what had happened. After all, she already knew I was looking into Williams’s death.

“We visited a brothel today,” I began.

“What? And who’s we?”

“Not for pleasure,” I laughed. “Business, Williams’s business.”

“Oh. Well, I’m glad it wasn’t for pleasure when you can get all the pleasure you want right here.”

“So, you’re saying you are jealous?” I enquired with interest.

“I might be.”

These were questions I shouldn’t have been asking but still, I wanted to know. “How can you be, when you’ve been with multiple lovers, including Williams?”

“That was when you were with Angelica, and not available.”

“What makes you think I’m available now?”

“The fact you’ve spent several nights in my bed, for one thing.”

“Fine.” I was defeated. She was right. In any case, why should I care if she was jealous or not? Did I now have feelings for her? I had entangled myself yet again in something I couldn’t quite control.

“You were saying, about the brothel?” She broke into my self-castigation.

“Oh, yes. We discovered Williams was a regular customer.”

“Oh, the little bugger.” She assumed an expression of distaste.

“Doing it too brown now, Barbara. He and you weren’t even an item.”

“I know, but fancy preferring a woman like that to me…” She stopped, perhaps trying not to be vulgar.

“A prostitute, lady of the night, as Fred calls them?”

“Well … yes.”

There it was. Everything came back to Barbara. This was one of her less attractive traits. So I turned the screw a little just for the hell of it.

“Actually, his regular, Nancy, was rather lovely.”

“I see.”

“You know, blonde, blue eyes, nice figure.”

“I don’t want to know.”

I laughed and left off teasing her, because I could see she didn’t like it. I continued with my tale. “Nancy told us something quite interesting.
