The Burden of Death

After my hasty decision, the battle descended into a chaotic crescendo of violence. At one point, it became impossible to tell friend from foe. I did my best to avoid hitting my lovers, but I was still on the edge from earlier. When I caught a glimpse of Sariel, my immediate instinct wasn’t to rely on him, but to attack.

It was only his excellent battle sense that saved him from being hit by my increasingly sharp feathers. And maybe that tipped someone off that we weren’t doing so hot, because shortly after that, Hamaliel stopped the battle.

“All right,” he said. “That’s enough for today. Metatron will assess what we’ve seen so far and will give you your results.”

Metatron was still out cold, although not because of me. If I wasn’t mistaken, it had been Azazel who’d knocked him out. Sandalphon popped up by his side and picked up his unconscious brother. “Dismissed,” he barked.

The simple word echoed over the battlefield like a sentence. My anger and power fled my body, and I collapsed to my knees like a puppet with my strings cut.

Within seconds, my lovers were there to help me. My attack on Sariel hadn’t gone unnoticed, but they were concerned, not angry.

Azazel reached for me and picked me up. I didn’t turn him away. It was selfish, but I didn’t have the strength to stand on my own feet.

“What was that all about?” Sariel asked. “What happened?”

The question wasn’t addressed to me, but to Michael. “It was my fault, I think. I’m not sure. It would be best to get her to Morrigan. She and the Reaper might have more insight.”

Nothing more was said after that. Just like Michael had said, Azazel flew me back into the academy. Together, we headed toward Professor Grim’s domain.

It was a little surprising that he and Morrigan hadn’t been present to supervise the training battle, but maybe they hadn’t deemed it necessary.

Or maybe they’d expected something to happen, I thought with some dismay as we arrived. They were both waiting for us in front of the Grim Reaper’s scythe-like home. He took one look at me and sighed, the sound making his fleshless bones rattle ominously.

“I wish you had a little more self-preservation, child. What did you do to yourself this time?”

“I’ll have to take responsibility for this one, Reaper,” Michael said. “I believe our minds connected during the battle and she caught glimpses of my past experiences, specifically my death.”

“That’s unfortunate, but not unexpected,” Morrigan said. She extended her hand toward me and smiled. “Come on, Delilah. You’ve been under a lot of stress as of late. Join me.”

Azazel wordlessly set me down and I followed Morrigan’s advice. I almost tripped over the hem of my dress in the process, but regained my balance at the last moment.

I blamed the Grim Reaper for it. He wasn’t looking at me, but I felt his power pulsing in the ground, dark, but truthful. With his help, I managed to reach Morrigan and take her hand.
