Today we are celebrating the 1,000 miles mark. There are still another 2,000 to go. This Pacific Ocean is bigger than I thought.
Rick is lying on the saloon berth with headphones in his ears, looking at the ceiling, mumbling in French. I admire his discipline in learning new languages, well actually, in everything. I always give up too soon. I tried to learn English a dozen times without success until I did the only thing that works for me: I moved to an English- speaking country all by myself. If I wanted to order a coffee, find a street, or a place to stay, I simply had to learn how to say it. And I did. Rick helped me a lot with it. I still remember reading him Swallows and Amazons in the evenings, stopping when I found a word I did not know.
Last night, a bird joined us and is currently resting on the bowsprit. If I am not mistaken, it is a brown booby. Rick says we should name it. I get the feeling he is already emotionally attached to it. Yesterday I saw him bringing the bird some water and a flying fish for a snack.
Flying fish! Every morning I have to collect all these unfortunate creatures that had their planned re-entry into the sea interrupted by our deck. If I miss one hiding in the dorade vent or under the dinghy, its aroma will let me know sooner or later.
Today I saw a whole school of them flying over the whitecaps. There were more than 200 fish skimming the water, their green wings unfolding over their flashing silver bodies like marine dragonflies.
