A couple of blocks after they started following him, Smith flagged down a taxi. Squeezing his eyes almost shut to protect them from the wind, Jory held tight onto Noah’s scale ridge and leaned slightly forward so he could keep his eyes on the taxi.

It took Jory a bit to realize the random directions the taxi was going weren’t so random after all. For some reason, the taxi kept backtracking down a lot of the same streets it had been on before, but never once stopped to let Smith out. When they went through the same intersection for a third time, Jory started to think Smith knew he was being followed and was trying to throw them off. Not that he could. There was no hiding from a dragon who had his prey in sight.

After a couple of hours of following its meandering route, the taxi eventually headed toward the Port, coming to a stop in front of a warehouse next to a small wharf.

Noah circled high above the warehouse.

Now that he wasn’t distracted watching the taxi, Jory’s stomach was making itself known. He swallowed hard as Noah made another pass, silently urging Smith to get a move on before he lost his lunch…not that he’d actually had any given they’d been at the police station at the time.

After what seemed like ages, but couldn’t have been more than a few minutes, Smith finally walked into the building, allowing Noah to land. He dropped down behind a tall stack of shipping containers and adjusted his wings so Jory could slide down. After a couple of minutes, Noah’s head twisted back to look at him.

Giving his mate a weak smile of apology, Jory forced his fingers to let go and slid down Noah’s wing. Once on the ground, he tried to step back, but his legs refused to cooperate, so he ended up leaning against Noah’s side and taking a moment to give his stomach time to settle and his legs to stop trembling. Once he felt like he could stand on his own without falling, Jory stepped back.

As soon as Noah finished shifting, he grabbed hold of him. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah,” Jory croaked. At his mate’s disbelieving look, he swallowed and tried again. “I’m good. Really. Let’s see what’s going on inside.”

“You sure?”

“Yeah. Let’s go.”

Using the stacks of shipping containers for concealment, Jory and Noah made their way over to the warehouse, then snuck down the side of the building, looking for a way in. Around the back, they found an overhead door that hadn’t been properly closed, leaving a small gap at the bottom. Lifting it high enough to slide under, they were inside and hidden behind a forklift parked along the back wall within seconds.

Waiting until they were sure their entry had gone unnoticed, they began slowly working through the warehouse toward the front, where they hoped to find Smith.

Reaching the end of a row of double-stacked crates, Jory peered around the corner, then gasped and quickly pulled back.
