Chapter 18
I didnât have any patients that Saturday, for which I was glad. I was distracted by the murder, by what I had learned about Byron, and by what I had found out at the barn. Byron hadnât told me anything about what they had found, which was driving me nuts.
On the one hand, I understood that I was likely still a possible suspect, but on the other hand, I wanted to know everything to be sure I was getting marked off that suspect list. There seemed like there were all these loose ends. Once again, I resolved that I was not ever going to be a detective. Of course, then I wouldnât be suspect every time a dead body turned up, either.
When Marty had died, Claire Wilcox had followed me around. At least there was no one tailing me, even Gil Daffney, who had seemed to believe I was a likely suspect in Laylaâs murder.
It was important to focus on the good.
At least I was in good company as a suspect. Everyone else in my little commercial complex was being questioned as well. While we were probably all suspects, I think that there was also the possibility that at least one of us was a victim.
After being formally questioned, I knew that Layla had been killed in the middle of the night.
I had been home, asleep, as most people would be at that time. It was hard to have an alibi when youâre asleep. At least that would be true of most everyone else. I was also glad that I was still living in the big house where there were more people around. The house might be too big for someone to hear me sneak out, but at least it made it that much harder to sneak around.
Cheri called me midmorning. I had finished some toast and a few rashers of bacon. I was having a large cup of coffee and letting the fumes wake me. Win was rinsing the pans out in the sink, the running water a white noise behind me, along with the fan over the stove.
Daisy had gone upstairs already, having finished her breakfast a bit earlier, so I was alone, watching the slight breeze move the newly green leaves on the bushes out back.
âWhatâs up?â I asked.
âI heard that you found a body in the old Willard barn, and I know you werenât the one who told me,â Cheri said.
âI found disturbed earth so I called the police. They were the ones who actually found the body. I was told to leave so I didnât have anything to say.â
âI canât believe you went out there. I would have been far too scared and with that weather yesterday, the way that barn leans and the roof falling in like that, you could have been buried alive and then what would we have done?â
âIâm fine.â I hoped Cheri wasnât going to go on about this.
âWell, you know that theyâre questioning Andy Willard about all this and it does not look good considering that his husband, Evan, has gone missing.
