Chapter 10
Warren lay back on the squeaky bed after his feet began to throb. He had been pacing the room waiting and worrying for the entire day. He was going out of his mind.
Eros had said heâd come to see him today and they would discuss different means of escape so Warren could find Vincent before Rex and Oscar did.
Yet it was almost midnight and he hadnât yet shown up. What did it mean? Had the queen gotten wind of what he was up to? Or had yesterday all been an act?
After all, Eros was a demon, the prince and the son of the Queen of Nethermore. Maybe he was as conning, conniving, and evil as his mother. And all he had said were more lies orchestrated to play on Warrenâs emotions and manipulate him.
He shook his head forcibly casting the thought out.
No, Eros had been saying the truth. Warren witnessed it in his eyes and felt it in his own heart. Plus he wouldnât have suffered a flailing just to twist and torment Warrenâs mind. So then why hadnât he shown up?
The sound of metal rattling greeted Warrenâs ears as he lay there staring at the damp limestone ceiling. He jolted to a sitting position just in time to see the massive wooden door open and Eros enter.
âSorry Iâm late, but I was detained for several hours.â
Warren lost his breath at the sight. Erosâs eyes were hollow, his hair disheveled. And as he came closer, Warren could see tiny burn marks spread throughout his skin as if someone used a soldering iron to poke him repeatedly.
Warren gasped. âWhat happened to you?â
Eros grinned feebly. âMother wanted me to keep her company and brush her hair. I didnât have time to bath in the healing spring afterward before I came here.â
âShe burned you so you would comb her hair?â Warrenâs brows furrowed with his fury.
âNo, technically itâs her hair that burned me. The electrical witch energy in her body.â
âHow can she do that to you, hurt her son like this?â Warren said, gently touching his arm to get a better look at the burn marks.
âItâs her nature. She lives off of the pain and agony and the fear she inflicts on her children and her subjects.â Eros leaned closer until their faces were only a few inches away. His gorgeous black eyes that had seemed dark and sunken suddenly brightened and sparkled when he grinned.
âIf I didnât know any better Iâd say you still cared about me.â His lips curled into a smile that made Warrenâs heart tremble and his stomach flutter.
âOf course I still care, Eros,â he blurted out, and then after reflection added, âI donât want you to be hurt.â
The merriment in Erosâs eyes dimmed slightly. âBut it isnât the same type of caring that we had shared.â
Warren drew his gaze and body away. âHow could you expect it to be the same after all thatâs happened? After all that Iâve been through? I have changed. Iâm no longer who I was because of it.
