Chapter 52

Hannah Littlefair

Georgina showed Dr Spellbound into Hannah’s office.

Hannah introduced herself. ‘We spoke briefly on the phone. I’m sorry I haven’t been able to speak to you before now. You wouldn’t believe how busy I am.’

‘Not a problem,’ he said. ‘Though I must say I don’t think I’ve ever been called on to advise on quite so complex a case as this one.’

‘Someone will be bringing coffee, and my colleague should be along shortly. Have you had to travel far to get here?’ Hannah asked.

‘I’m from Kettering of all places. It’s been some time since I’ve done any work for the Met.’

‘I’ll get one of my drivers to take you home. It can’t be much fun making this journey every day.’

He chuckled. ‘Oh, you needn’t worry on that score, Ms Littlefair. I always make sure your people put me up in a fancy Mayfair hotel.’

Jen came in with coffee, and the discussion began.

‘As I said, this is not your run-of-the-mill imposter scenario. The young lady in Houghton isn’t pretending to be someone she’s not — she is totally convinced that she is Chloe Seaward. She has revealed details of past cases that only Ms Seaward would know. She frequently mentioned a Lisa Carter, which I understand is — or was — your cover name?’ He glanced at Jen.

‘Yes, that’s right,’ she said.

‘According to her, she and Lisa were best friends. She even went so far as to say she lost Lisa to love.’

Jen frowned. ‘It’s true we were best friends. Are you saying then that she’s telling the truth?’

‘She didn’t once contradict herself,’ he replied. ‘And she became quite irritated by my questions, as would anyone who was telling the truth. An imposter, on the other hand, would have remained calm.’

‘Could someone have coached her on what to say?’ Hannah said.

‘That’s a possibility, but if that’s the case, she is a very good actress. Oh, and I conducted a basic medical examination.’

‘Any surprises there?’ Jen asked.

‘No. This young woman is perfectly fit, and her height and weight more or less correspond to that of Chloe Seaward.’

‘At the time of her death, Chloe’s height was . . . hang on a minute . . .’ Hannah consulted the Long Eaton case file detailing Chloe’s murder. ‘Ah, 160 centimetres and she weighed fifty kilos.’

‘You said “more or less”.’ It came out of Jen’s mouth sounding more like a statement than her seeking clarification.

The doctor nodded. ‘This woman is just under 160 centimetres.’

‘That means it isn’t her,’ Jen said.

‘I don’t think the slight difference in height is significant enough to warrant that conclusion, Detective,’ he countered.

Hannah glared at Jen, then asked, ‘So, what about the lie detector test?’

‘She was telling the truth. The readings remained constant throughout,’ he said. ‘When I asked her if she knew Jen Garner she answered no, but there was no indication that she was lying.’

‘She only ever knew me as Lisa. I only became Jen much later,’ Jen explained.

‘I also asked her if she was in a relationship, which she denied,’ Dr Spellbound continued.
