I dropped out

However, I did not give up training entirely. Instead, I did a few sprint triathlons in which I did well on the swim and bike, only to be passed by hordes of participants as I limped through the run. Was I just too old and beat up for this sport now?

But there were countless times during these events that participants would say nice, complimentary things to me as I passed them on the bike or they passed me on the run. It was nice to hear that I was someone’s hero and an inspiration.

I suppose being an inspiration might be a good enough reason to keep going on with this, even on an Ironman. Perhaps too, I was getting habituated to getting beat up and knocked down by Ironman so often that I had created a reflexive sign-up response to the Ironman. Nothing had changed to make the effort any better or easier than any other time.
