Roper turned and saw the big man bearing down on

them. “And you’d be Talbot Roper, right?”

“Right.”

Instead of hugging Clint as he had done earlier, he

settled for crushing both their hands with his.

“I hope Boris gave you those beers on the house,”

the big man said.

“He did.”

“Then I won’t fire his ass,” Black said, and laughed.

“You just missed the girls, but they’ll be on again in

ten minutes.”

“I may have to be gone by then,” Roper said. “I just

wanted to see if you had time to compare some notes.”

“Notes?”

“Clint says you’re going to try to help him,” Roper

said. “We might compare contacts.”

“I don’t think you know any of my contacts,”

Black said. “They’d be a little low- class for you.”

“I go as low as I have to, Mr. Black.”

“Just call me Sid.”

“Also, I’m not as high- class as you think I am.”

“We better go to my office and talk there,” Black

said. “It’ll be quieter when the music starts up again.

Follow me.”

“Clint?” Roper said.

“I’m going to stay here,” he said. “You let me know

what happens.”

“Bring your beer, Mr. Roper,” Black said, and led

the way to the back of the huge room.

True to Sid Black’s word the girls came on again while

he and Roper were still in his office. Clint ordered a

second beer and moved to the front of the room so he

could see better. Men were stomping their feet and

clapping their hands as the girls raised their skirts and

showed their legs while they danced. Roper was right,

this was not the place he’d ever come to for gambling.

Even in a private room, he bet they could hear this mu-

sic.

But to see pretty girls flashing their legs, this was

the ideal place.

Roper and Black returned after the girls went off

stage again. Clint had finished his second beer, but

had not ordered another one.

“You fellas done?”

“Turns out we do know some of the same people,”

Roper said as they left. Sid Black had mashed both

their hands again and said he’d be in touch as soon as

he found out anything.

“If somebody in Denver wants you dead, I’ll hear

about it,” he promised.

Outside, he and Roper caught another cab and

pulled away from the Arcade. Roper explained who

some of the people were that he and Black had in

common.

“Turns out I’m really not as high- class as he thinks

I am,” the detective finished.

They dropped Roper off first. As he climbed down

from the cab, he said, “Keep your eyes open. And I

mean, watch out for Shane as much as anyone else.”

“He said he didn’t think I had a motive for killing

Rose.”

“Right,” Roper replied. “Just watch out, all right?”

“Okay, Tal.”

As Clint entered his hotel room, his senses told him

someone was there. He could smell perfume in the air,

hear the rustle of the sheets on his bed. He could feel

the presence of another person, but his instincts told

him there was no danger.

He turned the light up on the gas lamp on the wall

and saw the woman lying in his bed.

“I convinced a bellboy to let me in,” Melanie said.

“I hope you don’t mind.
