CHAPTER SIX

HE’D NEVER SEEN such anger and fear in her eyes. Cara had been furious with him. It was an emotion he wasn’t used to from her. In the entire time he’d known her she’d only ever been calm, funny, happy, supportive and caring.

But anger? And fear?

He’d tried to apologise, but he really felt he’d done the right thing. If he hadn’t, Penny would have been in a whole world of pain when that bus had been lifted.

Once they’d got her out, they’d discovered she had an unstable pelvic fracture, two broken femurs and a suspected lower spine fracture. That was a lot of injury to one body, and without pain meds it would have been horrific. Penny had been numb from the waist down, but that might have been shock, or her mind protecting her from her horrific injury, but once the adrenaline had worn off she would have felt everything if he hadn’t gone under the bus.

It had been safe. The bus had been stabilised. There had been no other traffic flowing around them and he had made a judgement call.

But Cara’s response had him flummoxed. Was it more than the response of just a friend? Or was he trying to read too much into this?

Now, as he drove them both to the shopping centre once again, to help Cara find shoes to go with her golden dress, Cara sat in silence, staring out of the window. It was an awkward silence and one he wasn’t sure how to navigate. He didn’t want to make things worse, but he really hated not being able to talk to her. And having her angry with him like this made him feel repentant.

‘So...are we not going to talk to each other this evening or...?’ He let the question hang.

Cara sighed. ‘We can talk. So long as you admit you were reckless.’

‘I don’t think I was.’

She glared at him. ‘Silence it is, then.’

‘I’m sorry if I scared you by going under that bus. That wasn’t my intention.’

‘We hadn’t had confirmation it was fully stable, Tom! What if the bus had come down on you? You could have been hurt! You could have been injured. Badly. And then what would Gage do, huh? Without his mother and his father?’

Tom got what she was saying, but he was also hearing what she wasn’t saying out loud. Clearly she was worried about how his getting hurt would affect her. Wasn’t she? And if she was, what did that mean? And if it did mean something...if it did mean that Cara had feelings for him that went beyond friendship, then...

No. He was being ridiculous. She was probably worried that if he got hurt she’d have to rescue him too. That she’d have to take on too much with Gage, or something.

He thought for a moment, trying to think of ways to lighten the mood and take his mind off his quandary. ‘Well, I don’t have much experience in shoe-shopping with women, but from what I do know it’s meant to be a happy experience.
